From the revenue generated by lottery ticket sales, 48 percent is allocated to the prize fund. All but two of the prizes are calculated on a pari-mutuel basis, which means a percentage is allocated to each one as shown in the table. Payouts for the two fixed prize divisions are deducted from the prize fund before the remaining money is split.

With pari-mutuel prizes, the final amount each time depends on how many tickets are sold and how many winners there are. This can lead to a lot of variation between draws, so prizes today might be significantly higher or lower than they were last week or last month.

There is no guaranteed minimum jackpot but it usually starts at R3 million or more, with higher prizes on offer when special draws take place. If no players win the jackpot in any given draw, it will roll over and increase in value for the subsequent draw. There is also no jackpot cap in place, so the prize money will continue to grow until someone wins it. PowerBall has created the biggest winners of any game in South Africa.

If there are no winners in one of the other prize divisions, that prize money will roll down to the division below. For example, if no one matches five numbers in a particular draw, the prize money allocated to that division is instead shared among all players who match four numbers and the PowerBall. If there are no winners in the two fixed prize divisions, that money rolls over to the prize fund for the next draw.

PowerBall prizes are valid for 365 days from the draw date - see the How to Claim page to find out more. Unclaimed prizes are transferred to the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund to benefit good causes in South Africa.
