Claiming With a Lottery Pool

If you have won a Powerball jackpot as part of a lottery pool, the winnings can be split between all members of the group. Each individual must fill out a W-9 form at the time of claiming to ensure taxes are paid correctly. One prize check is presented to either one person within the lottery pool, or you can have it paid to a legal entity such as a partnership or a trust.

It is the responsibility of the person receiving the check on behalf of the group to distribute the winnings accordingly. If you form a trust to claim, you must obtain a tax identification number and note this on the partnership agreement or contract, alongside the names and social security numbers of all the members due to receive a share of the money.

Claim Period

Prizes must be claimed within 180 days of a drawing taking place. If you don’t come forward to claim your winnings in this timeframe, the unclaimed money is returned to the prize fund for future drawings.

Going Public

You don’t have to complete a claim form for prizes of $600 or less, so your identity does not need to be disclosed. For prize amounts over $600, you can request to remain anonymous but some details, such as your name and place of residence, may still be released. Your information will only be used in promotional advertising with your prior consent.

Lost and Damaged Tickets

Lottery tickets are deemed to be bearer instruments and the Louisiana State Lottery is not responsible for lost or damaged tickets. You are advised to sign the back of your ticket as proof it is yours because whoever is in possession of an unsigned ticket can legally make a claim for the winnings. You should contact the Louisiana Lottery Corporation directly if you wish to discuss lost and damaged tickets.

Where Does the Money Go?

More than half of each dollar spent on Louisiana Lottery Corporation games, including Powerball, goes towards prizes, with a further 35 cents allocated to the State Treasury Department. A full breakdown of how the lottery revenue is split is shown below:

Aread of Spending Percentage of Revenue
Prizes 53.7%
State Treasury 35.0%
Operating Expenses 5.7%
Retailer Commissions 5.6%

With the lottery required to give a minimum of 35 percent of their revenue to the state, over $3.5 billion has been raised since 1990. This revenue was predominantly put towards K-12 public education up until July 2014, when a constitutional amendment was passed, allocating the proceeds to the Minimum Foundation Program instead. The program has distributed funding to over 165 school districts since then, with each district having the freedom to spend the money to be most beneficial to their schools and students.

Louisiana Powerball Winners

Many big Powerball winners have come from Louisiana, including a $191 million jackpot won by three members of the same family on October 25, 2017. They decided to remain anonymous, and Jean C. Breaux Jr., a Lafayette attorney, claimed the winnings on behalf of the ‘292 Family Partnership’. The lucky trio opted for a cash lump sum payment, receiving $83 million in winnings after tax. They said at the time of their win: “We are absolutely elated that we won. We are a quiet family and prefer not to be treated as celebrities.” The winning ticket was sold in Eunice at Brownie's on 150 West Maple Avenue.

There was also a $97 million jackpot won by Metairie’s Carl Hunter on January 16, 2008. He won the eight-figure jackpot with a Quick Pick ticket bought from a Shell gasoline station on West Metairie Avenue. Hunter continued working for a construction company for four months following his win before eventually retiring. He opted to take a cash lump sum payment worth $33 million after tax. He was buying some milk for his wife when he bought his winning entry, and said: “There was a person in line in front of me and behind me also purchasing tickets for the drawing. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time."
