State Specific Rules

When you play Powerball in Maine, you can either select your own numbers or opt for an Easy Pick if you want them chosen at random. You have the option of adding Power Play to your ticket for an extra $1 if you want to boost the value of any non-jackpot winnings you might receive. The following rules also apply specifically to Maine:

  • You have to be at least 18 years old to play.
  • The cut-off time for ticket sales is 9:50pm ET on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, just over an hour before the draw takes place at 9:59pm ET.
  • You can enter up 30 consecutive drawings in advance.
  • Prizes over $5,000 will be subject to state taxes at a rate of 7.15 percent.

In Maine, you can also subscribe to play Powerball so that you never miss a draw. Subscriptions are available online, so you just need to set up an account, select your numbers and then choose to enter them for 26, 52 or 104 draws. You can watch Powerball drawings live on WAGM-TV, Fox 23, and WABI-TV.

How to Claim Prizes

You can claim prizes of less than $600 from any licensed lottery retailer in Maine. If you go to a retailer for an award of $600 or more, you will be presented with a claim receipt and instructed to either visit the Maine Lottery headquarters in Hallowell or submit your claim by mail.

You will need to present a valid form of government-issued photo ID such as your driver’s license or passport in order to claim a prize of at least $600. The address for claiming prizes in person is as follows:

Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations
10 Water Street
Hallowell, ME 04347

If you are submitting a claim through the mail, you need to send your winning ticket and a claim form to the following address:

Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations
8 State House Station
Augusta, ME 04333-0008

Claiming With a Lottery Pool

If you wish to claim a Powerball prize in Maine as a group, each individual must complete a claim form. You must specify how you wish the money to be split and then you will all receive a check, along with a W-2G tax form to ensure the tax liability is fair for everyone.

Claim Period

You must claim any Powerball prize you win within a year of the date of the drawing. If you win the jackpot, you have 60 days from the date you claim your prize to decide whether you would like to take the annuity or the cash option.

Lost and Damaged Tickets

Anyone in possession of a winning Powerball ticket can file a claim, so you have no rights over a lost entry if you have not signed the back of it. You may still be able to claim a prize with a damaged ticket if the retailer or lottery office can verify your barcode or ticket number.

Going Public

You can effectively stay anonymous in Maine by claiming your prize through a legal trust. The Maine Lottery has a duty to disclose who has won big prizes, but will only release the name of the trust if you form such an entity. If you do not wish to file your claim in the name of a trust, your name and place of residence will be made public.

Where Does the Money Go?

The Maine Lottery has paid out over $2.2 billion in prizes since it started in 1974, and 50 percent of the money raised from Powerball ticket sales has gone straight to players in the form of winnings since the game went on sale in 2004. The rest of the revenue helps to cover operating costs and reward retailers, but the main focus is on helping to benefit as many residents of the Pine Tree State as possible.

More than $1.2 billion has been transferred to the state’s General Fund since 1974, helping to support local schools, higher education, health services and a number of other programs. The Maine Lottery has also contributed more than $18 million to the Outdoor Heritage Fund since 1996, providing vital financial backing for projects relating to wildlife conservation.

Maine Powerball Winners

Maine is one of the few states still waiting for a jackpot winner, but many players have picked up second-tier prizes. One of those was Theodore Drake, a retired obstetrician from Bath, who won $2 million in May 2015 after popping in to Brackett’s Market to see his friend Kimberley Brackett, the co-owner of the store. He had only gone to give her a scrabble dictionary as they regularly played together, but decided to buy a Powerball ticket as well. It turned out to be a very profitable decision, as he added the Power Play and matched all five main numbers.

Blaine Marston, from Passadumkeag, also had the distinction of being the first Powerball millionaire of the year in 2020. This was the first edition of the special promotion, which in 2020 saw more than 300 lucky players win VIP trips to New York. One player, Marston, was then chosen at random during the broadcast of ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest’.
